I det arbete, som härmed offentliggöres, har jag, jemte skildringen af Vegas färd kring Asien och Europa, af naturbeskaffenheten vid Sibiriens nordkust, af det der rådande djur- och växtlifvet samt af de folk, med hvilka vi under resan kommit i beröring, sökt lemna en så fullständig öfversigt, som utrymmet medgifvit, af föregående upptäcktsfärder till Asiens polarhaf.

In the work now published I have, along with the sketch of the voyage of the Vega round Asia and Europe, of the natural conditions of the north coast of Siberia, of the animal and vegetable life prevailing there, and of the peoples with whom we came in contact in the course of our journey, endeavoured to give a review, as complete as space permitted, of previous exploratory voyages to the Asiatic Polar Sea.

이제 세상에 내놓는 이 책에서 나는 베가호가 아시아와 유럽을 돌아 항해한 여정을 서술하는 데 그치지 않고, 시베리아 북해안의 자연환경, 그곳의 동물상과 식물상, 그리고 항해 중 우리가 접촉한 여러 민족에 대해서도 함께 다루고자 하였다. 또한 지면이 허락하는 범위 안에서, 아시아 북극해로 향했던 이전의 탐험 항해들을 가능한 한 충실하게 개관하고자 하였다.
